Bend it like Beckham Movie Review

Bend it like Beckham is a story of a teenager called Jesminda who has to grow up in englande and has to get through the stereotypes of not only women, but culture aswell. because she is indian, her family expects her to be getting married and acting like an indian girl. "maybe i can find a nice indian boy like him" is a direct quote from Jess which suggests that she is not allowed to marry anyone from a different race to her.

At one point, the stereotype of jess's religion and culture is challenged because she falls for an english man, her soccer coach. this does not go down well with her parents, or her friend becuase her friend also likes the coach. this shows the stereotypical way that girls react when fighting over a boy. "you knew how i felt, but you still kissed him" is a quote from jess's friend jules during the two girls fight. but as always, in the end they work it out and are back to being friends soon.

when jess wants to play soccer, her family are strongly against it because it is not usually what girls do. jules has the same problem with her mother in the way that her father is supportive of all her desicions, no matter what. for example jules loves soccer and want to go pro, and her father is happy about this. however, her mother is always trying to get her to wear pretty clothes and heavily padded bras. when jules does not seem to want to do these things her mother goes a head and judges her and thinks that she is a lesbian. another example of the dad supporting her and her mother not is becuase when jules's mum starts to think that jules is a lesbian, her mum is in tears where her dad doesnt really care and thinks she can do what she wants. after jules talks to her mum explaining that she is not a lesbian, her mum starts to realise that jules is going to do whatever she wants to do no matter what. so she tries to learn how the game of soccer works and makes an efforrt to be supportive in other ways aswell.

Jesminda's parents however, where alot harder to convince that soccer is the best thing for jess. after a while, her father realises how sad she is and tells her to go play soccer if it makes her happy. " go play. if its the only thing that will make you smile on your sisters wedding day then go and come back smiling." after this, all she has to do is convince her mother to let her go to america to play soccer. it takes time for her mother to accept the idea of her daughter persuing her dreams different to the ones that she had for her, but in the end every one is happy.

At the ending scene, you can see that the parents of both the girls have embraced their dreams of being proffesional soccer players.
